Ari Ben-Menahem
Israeli scientist (1928–2026)
Ari Ben-Menahem was a renowned Israeli scientist born in 1928, who made significant contributions to the field of astronomy, as well as seismology. His academic career spanned several decades, during which he held the position of professor of mathematics and geophysics at the Weizmann Institute of Science, starting from 1964. In addition to his work at the Weizmann Institute, Ben-Menahem also served as a visiting professor at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Ben-Menahem's expertise extended beyond his primary field, as he was also a skilled author, historian of science, and polymath. One of his notable works is the book "Seismic Waves and Sources: the mathematical theory of seismology", co-authored with Sarvajit Singh. This treatise is considered a pioneering work in the field of seismology, building upon the foundational knowledge established at the turn of the 20th century. Ben-Menahem passed away in 2026, leaving behind a legacy of scholarly contributions and achievements in his field.
