He dominated the qualifying matches, sweeping aside Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with 6–0 scores, and later defeated Tigran Petrosian to set up a title match against Boris Spassky of the USSR. The highly publicized match, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, was seen as a symbol of the Cold War confrontation between the US and USSR, generating unprecedented worldwide interest.
