Boris Nemtsov was a Russian physicist and politician who played a significant role in the country's post-Soviet era. Born in 1959, he initially pursued a career in physics before transitioning to politics. Nemtsov's early involvement in politics led to his appointment as the first governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, a position he held from 1991 to 1997. During this period, he was instrumental in introducing reforms to the Russian economy under the presidency of Boris Yeltsin.

Nemtsov's political career spanned various roles, including Minister of Fuel and Energy, Vice Premier of Russia, and member of the Security Council from 1997 to 1998. He was also an elected member of several legislative bodies, including the Congress of People's Deputies, Federation Council, and State Duma. In addition to his government positions, Nemtsov co-founded several political movements and parties, such as the Young Russia movement, Right Cause coalition, and the Union of Right Forces electoral bloc and party. As an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin, Nemtsov became a prominent opposition leader until his death in 2015.
