Gumplin
Gumplin was a German Hebrew poet known for his satirical works. Although the exact date of his life is unknown, his literary contributions have been preserved through a single poem, Shir la'ag al bnei Reinus. This satirical piece, consisting of seven strophes, showcases Gumplin's wit and critique of the inhabitants of the Rhine Province, culminating in a refrain that highlights his clever use of language.
The poem was later published by Abraham Geiger, a notable figure in the field of literature, in his work Melo Chofnajim. Geiger's publication included both the original Hebrew text and a German translation, allowing a broader audience to appreciate Gumplin's satire. Notably, Gumplin's name is presented in acrostic form, adding a layer of complexity to his already clever poetic style. Through this preserved poem, Gumplin's legacy as a satirical poet continues to be recognized, despite the limited information available about his life.
